Fed: I was medically unfit for Vietnam, says Hill

Defence Minister ROBERT HILL says he was medically unfit to serve in the Vietnam War.

Asked to explain why he failed to go to Vietnam in the early 1970s, Senator HILL says
he was rejected for medical reasons after completing his studies, but he has refused to
elaborate on the medical reasons.

Opposition Leader MARK LATHAM yesterday called on the minister to give an adequate explanation.

Public records show Senator HILL'S birthdate was drawn on the national service ballot
in September 1966.

His biography shows he was studying law at the University of Adelaide at the time,
then travelled to London in 1968 to study before returning to Australia to work as a solicitor
in 1970.

National service was cancelled in 1972.
